The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s general industry and construction industry enforcement divisions recently performed their first COVID-19 compliance inspections of Michigan employers and found a handful of “serious” violations. While noting that the vast majority of employers are following proper guidelines, MIOSHA assessed fines as high as $7,000 to six Michigan companies for their failure to protect employees. A total of $33,400 in safety and health violations were issued. Violations were given for deficiencies in the following areas:
The cited companies were given suggestions on how to rectify hazardous conditions and will be required to prove that they have done so. Failure to comply could result in daily penalties adding up to tens of thousands of dollars. Companies cited have 15 days to contest the violations and penalties.
