Just yesterday, the season changed. The air has begun to cool. The days are becoming shorter. Fall is officially here.

With the new season also comes the annual Harvest Moon. The nocturnal phenomenon refers to the bright full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox (or beginning of fall). The Harvest Moon rises at approximately the same time every evening for a few nights. This full moon was especially important to pre-Industrial Age farmers who depended on the additional light to harvest crops late into the night. It was particularly imperative during fall when harvests are the largest.

The Farmington Farmers Market marks the lunar event with its own Harvest Day. On this day, the market’s farmers and food artisans will honor the season with food donations to CARES of Farmington Hills and the Neighborhood House. These contributions help both organizations to feed local families in need.

This year’s Harvest Day will take place at the Farmington Farmers Market on Saturday, October 2. The market regularly supports those in our community who need the most help, and we are always proud to be a partner in those efforts.
