Michigan Opera Theatre is planning its great return!

Like so many things, Michigan Opera Theatre’s season ended unexpectedly last year. Shutdowns and restrictions dimmed the lights of the performing arts across Michigan and the nation.

Yuval Sharon, the new artistic director of MOT, helped give new life to the theatre while it was closed. Michigan Opera Theatre was able to let the show go on within the six floors of the Detroit Opera House Parking Center. The drive-up concept brought in an audience from 14 states and garnered national attention. All aspects of the production were based on then-current COVID-19 restrictions. The parking garage was able to hold 96 cars per performance day and guests were charged by the car, not person.

For the upcoming season, Michigan Opera Theatre plans to take advantage of outdoor venues throughout Wayne and Oakland counties. The first production will be Cavalleria rusticana next month at the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre and will feature Christine Goerke, a world-renowned soprano brought on by the opera company as associate artistic director.
