On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Shiawassee Park in Farmington will once again turn into something a little unexpected: a river full of racing rubber ducks, a park full of families, and a community coming together around a shared purpose.
The annual Duck Race, hosted by CARES, has become one of those summer traditions that feels light on the surface, but carries real weight underneath. Thousands of ducks will race down the Rouge River, but each one represents something more meaningful: support for local families facing food insecurity across Farmington Hills, Farmington, and the surrounding communities.
Ducks start at just $5, and every adoption helps fund CARES Food Pantry programs that provide direct food assistance in our community. There are also bundle options, along with prizes like a year’s worth of groceries from Busch’s Fresh Food Market, but the real impact is measured in meals and stability for families who need it.
At Wright Beamer, this mission is close to home. Dirk Beamer serves on the CARES Board, supporting the organization’s work year-round and helping guide its broader impact in the region.
The day itself is part fundraiser, part festival, with live music from the Killer Flamingos, food vendors, bounce houses, a petting farm, face painting, and three brand new attractions. Families gather along the river for the main Duck Race, while sponsor races and smaller family heats add energy throughout the day. Even the Duck Race Video Game at CARES Duck Race lets people get involved ahead of time.
Sponsorships are still available and play a key role in making the event possible, while also helping expand CARES’ reach and visibility in the community. More details can be found online.
At its core, the Duck Race is simple: a community showing up for its neighbors. And sometimes, a small rubber duck is all it takes to help move that forward.
