Honoring Those Who Served

Legal benefits for America’s veterans

November offers us a moment to reflect—a time to remember the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Their courage, discipline, and sacrifice have protected our freedoms and strengthened our communities. In return, federal and state laws provide veterans with important legal benefits designed to support them in civilian life and honor their service.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) oversees most veteran programs, beginning with comprehensive health care. Eligible veterans may receive preventive care, mental health services, rehabilitation, prescriptions, and hospital treatment through the VA system. Those with service-connected disabilities receive priority access and may qualify for cost-free care. In addition, the VA offers disability compensation, providing tax-free monthly payments for injuries or illnesses linked to military service. Payments depend on the severity of the disability, with special provisions for veterans unable to work due to service-related conditions.

Education remains one of the most impactful benefits available. Through the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill, veterans can pursue college degrees, technical programs, or professional training. These programs often cover tuition, housing, books, and fees—and, in many cases, benefits can be transferred to a spouse or child.

The VA Home Loan Program helps veterans buy, build, or refinance homes with favorable terms, including low interest rates and no down payment requirement. By backing a portion of each loan, the government helps lenders offer better rates and reduced closing costs.

For veterans with limited income, pension programs and long-term care benefits provide additional financial support. Federal law also protects employment rights through the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), ensuring service members can return to civilian jobs after duty without discrimination or loss of position.

As President Ronald Reagan once said, “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give… and we remember the devotion and faith that gave them the strength to face the hell of battle.”

At Wright Beamer, we echo that gratitude. The legal rights afforded to veterans are more than statutes and regulations—they represent our nation’s ongoing obligation to those who have served.
