A trip to the farmers market is one of the best parts of a Michigan summer. Fresh-picked produce, local honey, and conversations with the people who grew your food make every visit a little different. For many older adults, Michigan's Senior Project Fresh program makes those visits even more rewarding.
Senior Project Fresh provides eligible seniors with a $25 benefit to purchase fresh, Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and honey from participating farmers' markets and roadside stands. To qualify, participants must be at least 60 years old (or 55 if they belong to a federally recognized tribe), meet income eligibility requirements, and apply through their local Area Agency on Aging or another approved distribution site.
Once approved, participants receive their benefit electronically through the Healthy Together app or a provided card. The funds can be used through October 31 at authorized vendors, making it easy to shop for seasonal produce throughout the market season.
We're fortunate that our friends at the Farmington Farmers Market participate in programs like Senior Project Fresh, helping connect local growers with members of the community who can benefit from greater access to fresh, nutritious food. Participants enjoy healthy, locally grown food, while Michigan farmers receive support for the work they do, making it a win for everyone.
If you think you or a loved one may be eligible, now is a great time to learn more online before the season winds down. Sometimes a little extra support is all it takes to fill your table with fresh, local flavors while supporting the community that grows them.
