Since 2013, community leaders have dreamed of bringing a new park to downtown Farmington. Ten years later, the dream is almost real.
Just between the historic Enterprise building and Sipp Smoothie & Juice Bar sits an asphalt area ready to go green. The Farmington Downtown Development Authority has long envisioned a small space where people can gather. The location has already been designated as part of the Syndicate Social District and is imagined as a place with outdoor seating and other features, such as string lighting and firepits, for public use and enjoyment. The DDA hopes to provide a spot for “everything from Farmington Community Library story hours, to jazz trios, to meeting your neighbors for a cheesesteak, pint or smoothie.” The park’s new design also incorporates ADA guidelines so that it can be enjoyed by residents of all ages and abilities.
The DDA aims to complete the construction during 2023 as a part of an ongoing effort to make downtown Farmington a pedestrian-friendly city and to bring more visitors to local businesses. Crowdfunding for this project allows the city to compete for a grant from Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Public Spaces Community Places program. If the crowdfunding goal is met by January 31, MEDC could match the total.
